On September 10, 2025, Genesee Fire Rescue participated in the coordinated emergency response to an active-shooter incident at Evergreen High School. Genesee Fire Rescue was activated as part of the multi-agency response to the incident at Evergreen High School, located approximately 10 miles southwest of our district in Jefferson County. That afternoon, multiple 911 calls began flooding in shortly before 12:30 p.m. local time, reporting gunfire inside the school, which prompted an immediate lockdown of the campus and the mobilization of over 100 law enforcement officers from local, state, and federal agencies.

Law enforcement, fire and EMS units arrived on scene within a few minutes, encountering a volatile and rapidly evolving situation.  Initial reports indicate the shooter fired approximately 20 rounds, both inside the school building and outside. Two students were struck by gunfire — one inside, and another outside near Olive Street and Buffalo Park Road — before the shooter exited the building, crossed the school grounds, and then died by self-inflicted gunshot.

During the response, Genesee Fire Rescue personnel played a supportive role alongside law enforcement, first responders, and EMS. The response likely included:

  • Triage and medical care for the wounded
  • Coordination with law enforcement for scene access and safety
  • Rapid transport planning for victims to trauma centers
  • Support in setting up staging  and coordinating with other responding agencies
  • Assisting in evacuation

Because active-shooter events unfold quickly and often across multiple zones (interior, exterior, transport), the coordination role of fire/EMS units is vital to preserving life and ensuring scene stability under law enforcement protection.

This September incident stands out as one of our more complex, high-stress responses — not just for the tactical coordination involved, but for the emotional impact on the community and first responders alike. We commend the resilience of all involved and extend our deepest condolences to the Evergreen community, the victims' families, and the Jefferson County School District. For those seeking support, resources like the Jefferson County Crisis Line (303-425-HELP) are available 24/7.

🛡️ Safety Tips of the Month

As cooler weather returns and residents begin firing up furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters, now is the time to take a few minutes to make sure your home and family are ready for the season ahead:

  • Check Your Smoke and CO Detectors
    • Replace batteries and test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
    • Every bedroom, hallway, and level of your home should have a working smoke alarm.
    • If your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them.
    • Learn more at NFPA’s Smoke Alarm Guide.
  • Inspect Heating Equipment Early
    • Have your furnace and chimney inspected and cleaned before regular use.
    • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn — including curtains, bedding, and furniture.
    • Never leave a heater unattended or running while you sleep.
  • Clean Up Fall Yard Debris Safely
    • Don’t burn yard waste; instead, use the community’s chipping or collection programs.
    • Clear pine needles and leaves from roofs, gutters, and decks to reduce wildfire risk.
  • Plan and Practice Your Escape
    • Review your family fire escape plan — every household member should know two ways out of each room.
    • Identify a safe outdoor meeting place.
    • Practice at least twice a year.
