On the evening of November 10, Genesee Fire Rescue responded alongside Foothills Fire Protection District and the Highland Rescue Team to a structure fire involving a small shed/outbuilding. Thanks to a rapid and well-coordinated multi-agency response, crews were able to contain the fire to the structure of origin and prevent it from spreading to nearby vegetation, homes, or additional outbuildings.
As we move into colder weather, this incident is an important reminder of the fire risks associated with battery chargers and tenders, as well as the storage of fuels, propane cylinders, and other hazardous materials in garages, sheds, and outbuildings. Chargers left running continuously, improperly stored fuels, and cluttered storage areas can increase the likelihood of electrical failures, overheating, or ignition sources.
Key Takeaways from this Incident:
Residents are encouraged to:
- Inspect battery chargers, extension cords, and power strips for damage.
- Avoid leaving chargers plugged in continuously or unattended for long periods.
- Store gasoline, propane, and flammable liquids in approved containers and away from ignition sources.
- Keep storage areas organized to reduce hazards and improve access for first responders.
GFR appreciates the strong partnership with our neighboring agencies and the continued vigilance of our community in reducing preventable seasonal fire risks.
🛡️ Safety Tips of the Month
As cooler weather returns and residents begin firing up furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters, now is the time to take a few minutes to make sure your home and family are ready for the season ahead:
-
Check Your Smoke and CO Detectors
- Replace batteries and test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Every bedroom, hallway, and level of your home should have a working smoke alarm.
- If your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them.
- Learn more at NFPA’s Smoke Alarm Guide.
-
Inspect Heating Equipment Early
- Have your furnace and chimney inspected and cleaned before regular use.
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn — including curtains, bedding, and furniture.
- Never leave a heater unattended or running while you sleep.
-
Clean Up Fall Yard Debris Safely
- Don’t burn yard waste; instead, use the community’s chipping or collection programs.
- Clear pine needles and leaves from roofs, gutters, and decks to reduce wildfire risk.
-
Plan and Practice Your Escape
- Review your family fire escape plan — every household member should know two ways out of each room.
- Identify a safe outdoor meeting place.
- Practice at least twice a year.
