Genesee Fire Protection District will be holding a regular election on May 6,
2008. This Election will be conducted by mail ballot. At that time, two
directors will be elected to serve 4-year terms and one director to serve a
2-year term. The District will also have a ballot question to increase the
authorized mill levy from 6 mills to 8 mills (details below).
Walk-in voting is also available at the offices of Toussaint, Nemer & Coaty, P.C., 32065 Castle Court, Suite 150 , Evergreen , CO 80439 , Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from April 11, 2008 through May 6, 2008. On Election Day, May 6, 2008, completed ballots may also be placed in a secure ballot box at the Genesee Fire Station, 23455 Currant Drive, Golden, CO 80401 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
An eligible elector for the purpose of this election is a person registered to vote pursuant to the "Colorado Uniform Election Code of 1992" and (1) who has been a resident of the District for not less than thirty (30) days, or (2) who, or whose spouse, owns taxable real or personal property within the district, whether said person resides within the District or not. A person who is obligated to pay taxes under a contract to purchase taxable property within the District shall be considered an owner of taxable property for the purpose of qualifying as an eligible elector.
The Genesee Fire Protection District is requesting the increase of up to
2.00 mills over the current levy of 6.00 mills commencing with taxes collected
in 2009. This will result in a maximum mill levy of up to 8.00 mills, an
increase that would amount to less than 5 cents per day per $100,000 of the
appraised value of a residence.
The costs of providing fire protection, fire suppression and emergency medical services have increased at a greater rate than any increase in tax revenue that would be available to the District without an election and voter approval of the increase. The District Board is committed to operating in a cost effective manner and understands that there are those who believe it should operate on taxes now available. However, an 8-mill levy is below the average for other fire districts in Jefferson County .
The District must also fund specific needs to prepare for the future and for new challenges. For example, funding is needed for a fire protection equipment replacement program, and to provide required training, including special wild-land fire, hazardous materials and homeland security training.
